Reasons Parents Leave Child Care Businesses

Parents choose childcare businesses because they have to work or go to school. In fact, when they search for childcare, they will choose a childcare program for many reasons:

  1. Affordable rates
  2. They love what you offer
  3. The location is convenient
  4. They feel connected to you.
  5. You may stand out amongst the rest

Furthermore, I have found that when parents are unhappy, they will either bring their complaints to you or they will give a notice to leave your childcare. In some cases, they may abruptly leave.

However, I have found that a parent that complains is not necessarily going to leave, they simply want you to do something about their concerns. This is why, I welcome parent complaints, because a complaining parent is simply showing you what you need to work on.

Here are some ways to assure that you are addressing parent concerns and communicate effectively with parents to reduce family turnover:

  1. Listen to the parent when they bring a concern to you.
  2. Develop a plan to address the concern
  3. Follow up with the parent to see if He or she is happy with the improvement.
  4. Communicate staffing or policy changes in a timely manner.
  5. Thank the parent for giving you a chance to fix the issue.
  6. Talk with your families and find out how they feel about your program.

Have you recently had a family to bring a concern to you? If so, how did you address it and is the issue resolved? Please share your thoughts about this post.

8-Ways To Build Fall Enrollment

This blog post was previously posted in 2020, however, I feel that it is still relevant today and I believe that you will find it to be helpful as you focus on fall enrollment.

When I opened my first childcare center, I noticed that at the end of the summer camp, I would have low enrollment. After the second summer, I realized that the best time to build enrollment for the fall is during the month of July.

Why July?

  1. July marks the mid-way point of Summer and you do not want to wait until August to Build fall enrollment
  2. Parents are thinking about preparing their children for back-to- school in July
  3. It’s a great time to reach those parents who are looking to enroll their children in preschool in the fall

Need some ideas on how to market your program for the fall?

Here are 8-ways to build fall enrollment in your program:

1. Invite your families to tell other families about your fall enrollment building campaign,  by offering an incentive to families who refer new families.

2. Hold a virtual Open house in July and be sure to have curriculum information, daily schedules, class photos, pricing info available online for parents to see. (parents want their children in an educational program)

3. Be sure to create a fall enrollment banner for your website and update info about your childcare or preschool program on your website.

4. Start marketing your fall enrollment specials on your social media pages during the month of July.

5. Insert enrollment forms in colorful 2-pocket folders. Be sure to add your program name or business card on the front of your enrollment folders.

6. If you own a center; invest in fall enrollment banners to hang on your playground fence or to display in your windows.

7. Offer Trial days.

8. Add preschool related clip art to your windows such as: school buses, apples, alphabet, etc.

Happy Enrollment Building!
