10 Ways to Makeover Your Hiring Practices

now hiringYour hiring practices will make or break your Child Care Business. In fact, can remember the first time that I hired a teacher to work in my home daycare back in 1999. I posted an ad at a local grocery store and it turned out to be that she was an excellent assistant. (Luck was definitely on my side, because I had no clue how to interview new employees)

Furthermore, I do not remember having a formal interview with her or hosting an employee orientation back then. However, I must say that it is important that the entire hiring process is conducted in a professional manner.

It took me many years to learn how to effectively hire, train and mentor my new employees and today I want to share with you seven ways to makeover your hiring practices.

  1. Place a professional looking ad online, share your job openings on your website and on your social media page or with a local agency when you have a job opening. Tip: Try Indeed.com, you will receive a $50 credit with your first ad.
  2. Get prepared to interview your potential employees. Schedule a face-to-face interview for no more than 20-30 minutes. Ask questions such as: Tell me about you? Tell me about your experience working with young children? How do you handle difficult behavior? What would your previous employer tell me about you? How do you define Quality Care? Are you able to work anytime during my business hours? That is just a few questions that will help you to hire the best person for your Child Care Business.
  3. When the potential applicant arrives for the interview, pay close attention to his or her character along with his or her attire. Have the applicant to complete an employment application before the interview.
  4. After the interview, let the applicant know that you will contact him or her once you have verified all the information on their application and have reached a decision. ** Never make any promises.
  5.  Interview at least 3 applicants before making a hiring decision. If you rush through a hiring decision, you could hire the wrong person for your Business.
  6. Follow your Gut feeling. If it does not feel right….don’t do it. I have second guessed my self many of times and hired the wrong person, because their credentials looked good, However, my gut feeling was not to hire the individual.
  7. Invite  potential employees to voluntarily teach in your program for 30-minutes to an hour; so that you can observe his or her classroom practices. **This practice has helped me to eliminate hiring teachers that were not the best fit for my program. So….be sure to never leave the applicant alone, have another staff member help you to observe the potential applicant.
  8. Once you have made your decision. Offer the applicant the job along with mentioning the starting salary and including any benefits.
  9. Before the applicants first day, plan an orientation day. On the orientation day, show the new employee around your home or center; discuss personnel policies, issue tax forms, give the employee a copy of your policies and introduce the new employee to staff and parents.
  10. Be sure to let the employee know that the first 90 days of employment is a probationary period and it is vital that you or someone on your team train the new employee. So, it is necessary to have a written training/mentoring plan in place.

To Your Success,

Building Enrollment With Video Marketing

(This blog post is a Freebie from my Marketing 101 toolkit)

According to Houston Chronicle, “Video marketing is but one option you have available as a tool to promote your business. Understanding the power of video marketing may help you to see how video marketing can be beneficial to your business and a good use of your marketing dollars.”

Moreover, Videos are easier to share over social media; it allows your website to rank higher on search engines, Video marketing helps to improve your brand, allows you to seem more engaging and is a great way to educate your parents about your program.

Today I want to share some video marketing tips with you:

  1. Consider making a video of the kids doing activities in your program (with the parents permission). Simply record the video on your cell phone and be sure that it is no longer than five minutes and upload to your social media pages once a week or even add to your website.
  2. If you are not camera shy; practice making 1-minute videos of yourself talking about your childcare business or giving parents a tour of your childcare space.
  3. You can also make cool videos of your program, by using photos with Animoto.com. I love this website and I use it to make videos of my Child Care Center!
  4. You may also want to create a You Tube Channel to upload videos of your program. YouTube is one of the top 3 websites as of January 2013 and it is great way to gain more business exposure.

Are you ready to start making videos? If not, practice first. I actually love recording my voice and adding pictures to the Video presentation with the Window Movie Maker on my computer. I would love to see your videos, so be sure to share!
